What makes a good Earthcache.

In my mind there are lots of good Earthcaches out there that provide a good lesson in Geology, but then there are those excellent Earthcaches that stand out. So what makes a good Earthcache, obviously a good lesson on the Geology at the site, a nice location, and some great views are always appreciated. The memorable Earthcaches I have visited also have that something else which I have struggled to put my finger on until now. For me personally I think it must be that element of danger or adventure, and it comes as no surprise that my top 3 Earthcaches all have that extra element.

1. Stac Pollaigh - An exposed climb up the final hurdle to the summit, and one of the highlights of a fantastic weekend in Ullapool with Dan. Some brilliant rock needles along the ridge, the swirling mist certainly added to the atmosphere, which lifted occasionally to allow some tantalising views North towards Suillven (which we also bagged the following year)

2. Volcanic Mayhem - Combining the adventure of The Elie Chain walk and some truly fantastic lunar type landscapes was totally genius. The chain walk is an adventure in itself, the Geology is outstanding and we completed it on a brilliant group weekend trip North on a lovely sunny day. The views over the Firth of Forth were spectacular.

3. Spar Cave - Only accessible when the tide has gone out, and even the Geology on the way in is special. The climb up the flowstone staircase to look down at the Mermaids Pool is a lot easier than it looks, and if its good enough for Bear Grylls and Ben Stiller, then its good enough for me. A cracking long weekend on Skye.
